FAQ
Common questions about privacy, security, passkeys, and how OwnerTags works.
What is OwnerTags? A privacy-first contact platform
OwnerTags is a privacy-first contact platform that lets someone reach an item’s owner without exposing personal contact details or requiring an app.
Do I need an app to use OwnerTags? No downloads required
No. Anyone with a smartphone can use OwnerTags through a simple web page — no app installation required.
What happens when someone taps an OwnerTags tag? Finder experience
Tapping a tag opens a secure page for that specific item with contact options. The finder can contact the owner through OwnerTags without seeing the owner’s personal contact details.
Is the owner’s personal information shown? No — not by default
No. Phone numbers, email addresses, and locations are not printed on the tag and are not displayed when a tag is scanned.
Is the finder’s information shared with the owner? Finder privacy
No. The finder’s phone number and personal email are not shared with the owner. Communication happens through the OwnerTags platform so both sides remain private.
Can either side choose to share information? Only if they want to
Yes. Either party may choose to share details during a conversation if needed to complete a return. This is optional and never automatic.
What are passkeys, and why does OwnerTags use them? Account security
Passkeys are a modern, more secure alternative to passwords that use your device’s built-in security (Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint, etc.). They help prevent phishing and password reuse.
Where is the NFC “tap” area on my phone? iPhone vs Android
On most iPhones, the NFC reader is near the top of the phone. On many Android phones, it’s near the center of the back. Exact placement varies by model.
Why do contact buttons sometimes disable? Safety and time limits
Contact sessions are time-limited for safety. If buttons are disabled, tapping the tag again will start a new session.
What if I don’t want to meet the owner in person? Safe return options
You’re never required to meet in person. If needed, you can contact OwnerTags Support for help coordinating a safe return.
